The Casa Program

Maria Montessori's first school was set in some apartment buildings in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. She called her classroom Casa dei Bambini, which means House of Children. The nomenclature of Casa has remained as the designated name given to the classrooms for children from 2 1/2 to 5 years of age. At Byron Woods Montessori School, our Casa programs consist of two classrooms of twenty-four children. Each classroom has three teachers. The classrooms are equipped with all of the appropriate Montessori materials for children of this age group. The classroom's activities are displayed on shelves for the children. Each area has a range of materials from beginning level, and step by step through subsequent levels ready for the child as he/she progresses. There are five basic areas in each Casa classroom: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Cultural Subjects which include Science, Geography, Music and Visual Art.
