The Montessori Method
Each child in a Montessori classroom is working at his or
her own level of challenge. The teachers work one on one, or
in small groups with the children. This allows each child to
progress at his or her own natural rate of interest. For
example, if a child is having difficulty with a particular
concept in math, he or she is able to have ample time to
work with the special Montessori materials until the concept
is understood. On the other hand, if a child is ready to
progress to the next level of work, then he or she will be
given those lessons right away, therefore eliminating the
frustration of waiting for the rest of the class. The
Montessori materials were developed by Dr. Montessori. These
materials offer the child a hands on approach to each area
of the classroom. This allows a young child the ability to
gain interest in subject areas which have been designated by
the traditional education system, as curriculum for later
grade levels.
